Orthotics and Prosthetics are the fields of study and provision of external supports for the body (orthotics), and devices that replace all or part of a segment of the body (prosthetics).  

Orthotics is a word that is sometimes used to mean arch supports, or inlays that go into a shoe to support the foot.  Actually, the field of orthotics encompasses this type of device as well as any plastic, metal, cloth, or lightweight composite device that is worn to stabilize, protect or restrict motion of a segment of the body.  Orthotics, or Orthoses, are used by people who have weakness, following a stroke for example, or have had an injury, such as a fracture or a torn ligament.  Other people wear a spinal orthosis to correct a scoliosis curve, or following spinal surgery. Orthotics also encompasses special shoes and insoles designed for diabetics.

Prosthetic devices are worn by individuals following an amputation of an arm or a leg, or a mastectomy.  These items are manufactured to replace the function of the missing segment, thus allowing the person to walk, grasp objects, or just be more balanced and symmetrical. 

The provision of prosthetic or orthotic devices involves an evaluation of the involved segment, careful measurement or casting of the body, consideration of the individual's preferences, ordering or manufacturing of the correct device, and educating the patient on the proper use and care of their device.  We work in conjunction with other healthcare professionals such as the physician, physical or occupational therapist, or nurses and caregivers.

At B & K, we have an ABC certified orthotist-prosthetist who evaluates, manufactures, and fits limb and spinal braces and limb prosthetics, and also an ABC certified mastectomy fitter, who takes care of women who need a breast prosthesis.  These services are available Monday through Friday, 9AM to 5PM.  An appointment is recommended.  Please call our main number and press extension 8 if you have questions or would like to schedule an appointment,
